In the context of 5G, with facility automation and connected cars in mind, there is a growing awareness of expanding communication targets to include communication between devices without human involvement (e.g., M2M, V2V, D2D). Looking ahead to 6G, communication networks are expected to provide not only communication pathways but also advanced computational processing such as AI processing at the edge, as well as sensing data through radio wave propagation. To meet these needs, user terminals will require robust "highly accurate time synchronization and position identification (= space-time synchronization)" as infrastructure, along with highly resilient information security and compact communication technologies capable of transmitting large amounts of data exactly when needed.
This project aims to secure Japan's position in the deployment of new communication technologies across various verticals. It seeks to achieve this through extensive discussions on the aforementioned space-time synchronization technologies, spanning from the development of key devices and architectural proposals to industrial applications and solutions to social issues.
Activities related to space-time synchronization will be carried out with the following objectives:
